Scrabble and Words With Friends tips

  • Seven-letter words score a 50-point bonus in Scrabble (35 in Words With Friends) — always check for bingos first.
  • High-value tiles (Q, Z, X, J) are most useful in short 2–3 letter words that hit double or triple squares.
  • Common two-letter words accepted in Scrabble include QI, ZA, XI, and JO — memorising these helps offload awkward tiles.
  • When you have a blank tile, unscramble your rack treating it as every letter from A–Z to find the best plays.

Letter frequency in English

The most common letters in English are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, and R. In Scrabble, tiles are distributed to reflect this — there are 12 E tiles but only one each of Q, Z, X, and J. When unscrambling, words containing these rare letters often have fewer valid arrangements, which can make them easier to identify. A rack with a Q almost always needs a U nearby to form a valid word.

How the unscrambler works

The unscrambler checks your letters against a dictionary of over 170,000 English words. For each word in the dictionary, it verifies that the word's letters are all available in your rack (using each letter at most once). Results are then sorted and grouped by length. The whole process runs instantly in your browser — no server round-trips required.
